Sabres Spotlight:

Sabres Defenseman, Rob Siegel

Plano Sabres star defenseman, Rob Siegel, is second on the team in goals, assists and points (19-17-36) and first in penalty minutes (42) at the midway point of the season (through 20 games).

On Tuesday, January 30, 2001 in a game against the Maple Leafs, Rob Siegel took a nasty deflection off a Curt Johnson slapshot to the face and had to leave the game.  The puck hit him just above the chin, took out one upper tooth completely and chipped two other teeth as well.  It also severed the nerve controlling his lower lip, which may or may not have permanent effects.  He was in surgery until 4 am with a plastic surgeon on call at Plano General Hospital, but is home now with a big supply of medication.  He needed about 100 stitches (most of them internal stitches).

The good news is that the puck was not damaged, Curt's slapshots are getting harder, and Rob looks more like Mike Ricci (voted NHL's sexiest man by female readers of The Hockey News). See photo below.
